Conscientization Report

 Conscientization Programme Report

Introduction

Conscientization or critical consciousness is a popular education and social concept by Brazilalian pedagogue and educational theorist Paulo Freire. It focuses on achieving an in-depth understanding of the world, allowing for the perception and exposure of social and political contradictions. It also includes taking action against the oppressive by that understanding.

As part of the B.Ed curriculum, 2021-2023 academic year, we have organized a conscientization programme in MMHSS, Vilakudy during the teaching practice. The programme was held on January 30, 2023 on the topic “waste management”. In the awareness programme named “A culture for better future”, we made a waste disposal pit and took a seminar class in association with NSS volunteers.

Planning

For the first phase of teaching practice, during the third semester, we were assigned to different schools of the locality and we 11, got a chance to do our service in MMHSS, Vilakudy. Till the date, what we went through with our academics were applied during the teaching practice.Conscientization programme was the part of our general paper ‘EDU 11 : Developmental Perspectives Of Education’.

We were divided into three groups and Arya, Sreehari and I were in the same group.

We  choose the topic ‘waste management’ as a conscientization programme in the context of children often not keeping their classrooms clean and throwing plastic waste and food wastes around the school premises. On January 20, we had a discussion about awareness of students on the topic of waste management. We keenly observed the habits of students to clean their classrooms, disposal of plastic wastes and food wastes. There was a waste disposal pit in the school, but the students did not properly dump the wastes in that pit. So we decided to conduct an awareness programme about the importance of proper waste management.

We decided to make a powerpoint presentation on waste management and it must include types of wastes, classification of wastes, sources of waste, impact of improper waste disposal, disposal solutions and special mention about the state government and waste disposal programme that is Haritha Karma Sena. We divided these topics into three for taking class. As the existing pit was filled with waste we decided to make the students dig another pit for dumping the waste. Sreehari created Powerpoint on January 25, 2023. We sought permission from the headmaster on 27/01/2023 and he gave permission to conduct the programme on January 30. 2023. Then we invited the teachers of the school for the programme.

Execution

The awareness programme was conducted on 30 January 2023 at 12 PM for VIII and IX students in the IX standard classroom. 40 students participated in this programme. The programme started with an introductory speech by myself. I inquired about how they dispose of waste in school. Some students replied that they will dispose of the waste in the wastebasket and a few replied that they will throw it around. I asked them whether these activities are good or bad. I provided a detailed section about wastes and types of wastes.

Sreehari took a class about classification of wastes according to their property. He also discussed waste classification according to their effects on Human Health and the environment. He mentioned the examples of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes. He also asked about the sources of wastes. Students replied that wastes are produced in houses, industries and institutions.

Arya talked about impacts of wastes if not managed properly. Students shared their knowledge about impacts and she consolidated it. They were made aware about disposal solutions such as landfill and incineration. They were made aware that a programme of government of kerala that is Haritha Karma Sena on proper waste disposal was included. Finally, I concluded the entire programme by explaining about the 3R’s - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

On February 1, 2023, we made the students dig a new waste disposal pit in the school near the existing pit. We made a new pit in collaboration with the NSS Volunteers of the school. The size of the new pit was 2 metres length, 1.5 metres width and 1 metre height. We dig the new pit from 1 metre away from the existing pit. The pit was constructed using hoe, spade and shovel. We cleaned the surroundings of the existing pit.

Reflection

After the programme, the students decided to clean their classroom once a week. They also decided to collect plastic waste from schools and hand it to Haritha Karma Sena. We noticed that students dump the waste correctly in the pit. The NSS unit and JRC unit decided to clean the surroundings of the pit once a week.

While preparing the PPT, we become ore aware about waste management, its disposal techniques and role of Haritha Karma Sena. We were satisfied to watch the students dump the waste correctly in the pit. We got appreciation from school authorities and teachers for conducting such a programme.
